The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on Thursday said parents of the pupils who destroyed some public secondary schools in the state during a protest must be ready to rebuild them.
The pupils, who have been arrested by the state police command, had gone on rampage, burning schools and destroying school property while protesting the decision of the government to cancel automatic promotion in schools.
Condemning the act, the governor said he also asked pupils who abused him during another protest to apologise as a way of entrenching discipline.
He said, “Let me inform you that the parents of the pupils who were involved in the burning of government schools during a protest recently must rebuild the schools. If they don’t rebuild the schools, we will not re-open them and that is the final decision on that.
“Can you imagine pupils protesting and burning down schools because we insisted on no automatic promotion? They failed their examinations and we asked them to repeat the classes so as to improve the standard of education in the state, yet they got angry and burnt government schools. That is highly unacceptable and we will not tolerate such arrogance because we are not in a jungle.”
Ajimobi added that the introduction of Schools Governing Boards in public secondary schools would help to improve on the standard and management of education in the state.
